Salim bin Abdallah was a Swahili-Arab trader from the East African coast, linked with Zanzibar, who settled at Nkhotakota on the western shore of Lake Malawi around 1845. Taking the title Jumbe, he founded a trading state that shipped slaves and ivory across the lake towards the coast. His settlement became a centre for the spread of Islam in the region of present-day Malawi.
