Salim al-Atrash

d. 1923 · 20th century

Salim al-Atrash was a Druze leader from the powerful al-Atrash family of the Hauran in southern Syria. When France granted Jabal al-Druze autonomy under its mandate in 1921, he became the first governor of the Jabal Druze State. His death in 1923 opened a dispute over the succession, and the appointment of a French governor helped provoke the Great Syrian Revolt of 1925.
