Hauran

Also known as Hawran, Auranitis

The Hauran is a volcanic plateau and fertile plain in south-western Syria, extending into northern Jordan, between the Golan Heights and the Jabal al-Druze. Long a granary for Damascus, it was ruled in turn by Aramaeans, Nabataeans, Romans and Ghassanids, and its black basalt towns, such as Bosra, preserve many ancient buildings.
