Gaulanitis

Gaulanitis was a region east of the Sea of Galilee and the upper Jordan, corresponding roughly to the modern Golan Heights. Part of the realm of Herod the Great, it passed after 4 BCE to his son Philip the Tetrarch, who refounded Bethsaida as Julias. In the Jewish revolt of 66 CE its fortress town of Gamla was besieged and destroyed by the Romans.
