Gauleiter
A Gauleiter was the Nazi Party's leader of a regional branch, or Gau, in Germany and later in annexed territories. Appointed by Hitler and answerable to him alone, Gauleiters often also held state offices such as Reich governor, and during the Second World War, as Reich defence commissioners, they gained wide powers over civil defence, labour and evacuation.
