Wehrmacht
The Wehrmacht was the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945, comprising the army, navy and air force. Built up rapidly in defiance of the Treaty of Versailles, it won swift victories early in the Second World War before being worn down on the Eastern Front and defeated by the Allies. Its units took part in war crimes and the Holocaust, and it surrendered unconditionally on 8 May 1945.
