Gustav Simon

1900–1945 · 20th century

Gustav Simon was the Nazi Gauleiter of Koblenz-Trier, later Moselland, who headed the civil administration of occupied Luxembourg from 1940 to 1944. He pursued the Germanisation and de facto annexation of the country, banning the use of French, imposing German law and introducing conscription of young Luxembourgers into the Wehrmacht in 1942, which provoked a general strike that was brutally suppressed. He died in British custody in 1945, apparently by suicide.
