Samuel Aba

d. 1044 · 11th century · Also known as Aba Sámuel

Samuel Aba was king of Hungary from 1041 to 1044. A magnate of the Aba kindred and brother-in-law of Stephen I, he was raised to the throne when the nobles expelled Peter Orseolo. His rule provoked opposition among the nobles and the intervention of Emperor Henry III, who defeated him at the Battle of Ménfő in 1044; he was captured and killed soon afterwards.
