Sanatana Goswami

c. 1488–1558 · 16th century

Sanatana Goswami was a theologian of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan and elder brother of Rupa Goswami. He served Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah of Bengal as a minister, was imprisoned when he tried to resign, and escaped to join Chaitanya. At Vrindavan he wrote Sanskrit works on Vaishnava ritual and theology, including the Brihad-bhagavatamrita, and helped restore its sacred sites.
