Santa Sofia, Benevento

c. 760 · 8th century

Santa Sofia is a church in Benevento, southern Italy, founded around 760 by the Lombard duke Arechis II as the national shrine of the southern Lombards. Its unusual star-shaped plan, with a central hexagon of ancient columns, makes it one of the most original surviving early medieval buildings. Since 2011 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Longobards in Italy, Places of Power.
