Sao Boso

d. 1836 · 19th century · Also known as King Boatswain

Sao Boso, known to Europeans as King Boatswain, was a Mandingo warrior and trader who in the early 19th century built the Condo Confederation around Bopolu in the hinterland of north-western Liberia. Allied with Muslim Mandingo merchants, he controlled trade routes between the interior and the coast and dealt with the American colonists at Monrovia. His death in 1836 left the confederation divided by succession quarrels.
