SAVAK

1957–1979 · 20th century

SAVAK was the secret police and intelligence service of Iran under Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, founded in 1957 with American and Israeli help. It watched, imprisoned and tortured political opponents, and its reputation for brutality fuelled hatred of the regime. It was dissolved after the Iranian Revolution of 1979.
