Savang Vatthana

1907–c. 1980 · 20th century

Savang Vatthana was the last King of Laos, succeeding his father Sisavang Vong in 1959. His reign coincided with civil war between the royal government and the communist Pathet Lao, and with heavy American bombing. After the Pathet Lao took power he abdicated on 2 December 1975, and he and his family were later sent to a re-education camp, where he is believed to have died.
