Iranian Revolution
The Iranian Revolution of 1978–1979 overthrew the Pahlavi monarchy of Mohammad Reza Shah. Mass protests and strikes by clerics, students, leftists and liberals forced the shah to leave Iran in January 1979, and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned from exile to lead the founding of the Islamic Republic, approved by referendum in April 1979. The revolution transformed Iran's relations with the West and alarmed the monarchies of the Gulf.
