Second Buddhist Council

c. 4th century BCE · 4th century BCE · Also known as Council of Vaishali

The Second Buddhist Council was an assembly of monks held at Vaishali, according to Buddhist tradition about a century after the death of the Buddha. It was called to judge ten practices of the monks of Vaishali, among them accepting gold and silver, which the elders condemned as breaches of monastic discipline. Later accounts link it with the first split of the Buddhist community into the Sthavira and Mahasanghika schools.
