Second Triumvirate

The Second Triumvirate was the political alliance formed in 43 BCE by Octavian, Mark Antony and Lepidus to rule the Roman state after the assassination of Julius Caesar. It defeated Caesar's assassins and carried out proscriptions of its opponents. Its breakdown led to the war between Octavian and Antony, from which Octavian emerged as Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire.
