Shah (title)

Shah is a Persian royal title meaning king, used by rulers of Iran from ancient times. It was the title of the Sasanian monarchs and later of the Khwarazmian, Safavid, Afsharid and Zand rulers. Accounts of the Safavid Empire show the title combining royal authority with religious legitimacy after Ismail I proclaimed himself shah.
