Shashanka

d. c. 625 · 7th century

Shashanka was a king of Gauda in Bengal in the late 6th and early 7th centuries, often described as the first ruler to unite much of Bengal. From his capital Karnasuvarna he extended his power into Magadha and Odisha, and around 606 he killed Rajyavardhana of Thanesar, making Harsha his lifelong enemy. Buddhist sources portray him as a persecutor; his gold coins show Shiva with the bull Nandi.
