Sharur District
Sharur is a district of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, in the fertile plain of the Aras River near the borders with Turkey, Iran and Armenia. In 1501 Ismail I defeated the Aq Qoyunlu at the Battle of Sharur, a step towards founding the Safavid state. After 1918 the district was disputed between Armenia and local Muslim governments such as the Republic of Aras.
