Nakhchivan
Nakhchivan is a city and region in the South Caucasus, now an autonomous republic of Azerbaijan separated from the rest of the country by Armenia and bordering Iran and Turkey. The city was a residence of the Eldiguzid atabegs in the 12th century and later the seat of a khanate under Persian rule, annexed by Russia in 1828. After the First World War it was contested by Armenia and Azerbaijan before becoming part of Soviet Azerbaijan.
