Shin Sawbu

1394–1471 · 15th century · Also known as Binnya Thau

Shin Sawbu was queen regnant of the Hanthawaddy Kingdom in lower Burma from 1454 to 1471, the only woman to rule a Burmese kingdom in her own right. A daughter of Razadarit, she had lived at the court of Ava before escaping home. Her peaceful reign was a time of prosperity, and she enlarged and gilded the Shwedagon Pagoda before handing power to Dhammazedi, a former monk she chose as successor.
