Pathein, formerly Bassein, is a port city in the Irrawaddy Delta of southern Myanmar and capital of the Ayeyarwady Region. It was a provincial centre and port of the Mon kingdom of Hanthawaddy, trading across the Bay of Bengal, and later of the Burmese kingdoms. Under British rule from 1852 it grew as a centre of rice milling and shipping.
