Sigurd Eysteinsson

d. c. 892 · 9th century · Also known as Sigurd the Mighty

Sigurd Eysteinsson, called the Mighty, was according to the Orkneyinga saga the first Earl of Orkney, in the late 9th century. Brother of Rognvald Eysteinsson, Earl of Møre, he received the islands from him after Harald Fairhair granted them to Rognvald. Sigurd extended Norse power into northern Scotland and, according to the sagas, died from a wound caused by the tooth of a slain enemy, Máel Brigte.
