Rollo

c. 860–c. 930 · 10th century

Rollo was a Viking leader of Scandinavian origin who founded the Norman principality on the lower Seine. After a failed attack on Chartres in 911, King Charles the Simple granted him lands around Rouen, traditionally by the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, in return for defending the river and accepting baptism. His descendants, including William the Conqueror, ruled Normandy as counts and dukes.
