Sigtuna

Sigtuna is a town on Lake Mälaren north-west of Stockholm, founded around 980 as a royal centre. King Olof Skötkonung struck the first Swedish coins there around 995, modelled on English pennies, and in the eleventh century it became an early bishop's seat and a base for the Christianisation of Sweden. It declined in favour of Uppsala and later Stockholm, but its medieval church ruins survive.
