Sila (Calabria)

The Sila is a high forested plateau in Calabria, in the toe of southern Italy, rising to about 1,900 metres. In antiquity its pine forests supplied the Bruttii and later Rome with timber and pitch, used for shipbuilding and waterproofing. Much of the plateau is now protected in the Sila National Park, and its artificial lakes supply hydroelectric power.
