Simplon Pass

The Simplon Pass is an Alpine pass at about 2,005 metres between Brig in the Swiss canton of Valais and Domodossola in Italy. It was a medieval trade route, controlled in the 17th century by the Brig merchant Kaspar Stockalper. Napoleon had a carriage road built over it between 1801 and 1805, and the Simplon railway tunnel beneath the area opened in 1906.
