Sion is the capital of the Swiss canton of Valais, in the upper Rhône valley. It has been the seat of a bishop since the late 6th century, and from 999 its bishops also held the temporal lordship of the Valais as counts. The town is dominated by two hills crowned by the fortified church of Valère and the ruined castle of Tourbillon.
