Zenden
The Zenden (French dizains) were the self-governing communal districts of the Upper Valais, in present-day Switzerland. Seven of them, including Goms, Brig, Visp, Leuk and Sion, gradually took power from the prince-bishops of Sion in the 15th to 17th centuries and forced them to give up temporal rule. Allied with the Swiss Confederacy, they governed the Valais as a republic and held the Lower Valais as a subject land until 1798.
