Sixth Crusade

1228–1229 · 13th century

The Sixth Crusade (1228–1229) was led by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, who sailed to the Holy Land while excommunicated by Pope Gregory IX. Without fighting a major battle he negotiated the Treaty of Jaffa (1229) with the Ayyubid sultan al-Kamil, which returned Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth to Christian rule for ten years. It was the only crusade after the First to regain Jerusalem.
