Sopron

Also known as Ödenburg

Sopron, in German Ödenburg, is a city in north-western Hungary close to the Austrian border, built on the site of the Roman town of Scarbantia. Although the peace treaties after the First World War assigned the surrounding region to Austria as Burgenland, a plebiscite in December 1921 kept the city and nearby villages in Hungary, earning it the title of most loyal town. Its medieval and baroque old town centres on the Fire Tower.
