Burgenland

Burgenland is the easternmost and least populous state of Austria, a narrow strip of land along the Hungarian border with its capital at Eisenstadt. For centuries part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the largely German-speaking region was assigned to Austria by the treaties of Saint-Germain and Trianon after the First World War. It was handed over in 1921 after fighting with Hungarian irregulars, while the town of Sopron voted in a plebiscite to remain in Hungary.
