Ignaz Seipel

1876–1932 · 20th century

Ignaz Seipel was an Austrian Catholic priest and leader of the Christian Social Party who served as chancellor of Austria from 1922 to 1924 and from 1926 to 1929. He stabilised the collapsing currency with a loan arranged through the League of Nations under the Geneva Protocols of 1922. Hostile to the Social Democrats, he encouraged the right-wing Heimwehr militias, deepening the divisions of the First Republic.
