Soufrière Hills

Also known as Soufrière Hills volcano

The Soufrière Hills is an active volcano in the south of the Caribbean island of Montserrat. Dormant for centuries, it erupted in July 1995 and has remained intermittently active, with dome collapses and pyroclastic flows that killed 19 people in 1997 and buried the capital, Plymouth. The southern half of the island became an exclusion zone, and about two thirds of the population left.
