Souliotes

The Souliotes were an Orthodox Christian community of Albanian origin from the mountains of Souli in Epirus, in north-western Greece. Organised in clans, they kept a fierce autonomy under Ottoman rule and resisted Ali Pasha of Ioannina for years until they surrendered in 1803; according to tradition, women of Souli threw themselves from the cliffs of Zalongo rather than be captured. Many later fought in the Greek War of Independence, among them Markos Botsaris.
