Dance of Zalongo

1803 · 19th century

The Dance of Zalongo is the name given to the mass suicide of Souliote women on Mount Zalongo in Epirus in December 1803, after Ali Pasha of Ioannina had forced Souli to surrender. According to tradition, the women, to avoid capture by his troops, threw their children and then themselves from the cliffs while dancing and singing. The event became a symbol of Greek resistance and is marked by a monument on the site.
