Spina

c. 520–3rd century BCE · 3rd century BCE

Spina was an Etruscan port on the Po delta near modern Comacchio, in north-eastern Italy, founded in the late 6th century BCE. It was a major trading centre between the Etruscans of the Po plain and the Greek world, and its cemeteries, uncovered during land drainage in the 20th century, yielded thousands of graves rich in Athenian painted pottery. It declined as the coastline shifted and the Celts advanced.
