Sretenje Constitution

1835 · 19th century · Also known as Candlemas Constitution, Constitution of the Principality of Serbia (1835)

The Sretenje Constitution was the first constitution of modern Serbia, adopted at Kragujevac on 15 February 1835, the feast of Sretenje (Candlemas). Drawn up to limit the autocratic rule of Prince Miloš Obrenović, it divided power between the prince, a state council and an assembly and abolished feudal obligations. Under pressure from the Ottomans, Austria and Russia it was suspended within weeks.
