Ssangseong Prefecture

1258–1356 · 13th century · Also known as Ssangseong Commandery

Ssangseong Prefecture was an administrative district set up by the Mongols in 1258 in north-eastern Korea, around modern Kumya and Yonghung, after local Korean officials defected to them. It remained under Yuan control for almost a century. In 1356 King Gongmin of Goryeo recovered it by force, helped by the local commander Yi Ja-chun, father of Yi Seong-gye.
