St. Mary's City, Maryland

1634 · 17th century

St. Mary's City is the site of the first English settlement in Maryland, founded in March 1634 by colonists who arrived on the ships Ark and Dove under Leonard Calvert, near the mouth of the Potomac. It was the colony's capital until 1694, when the government moved to Annapolis, after which the town declined. Its archaeological remains now form an outdoor history museum.
