St. Peter's Basilica

St. Peter's Basilica is a church in Rome built over the traditional tomb of the apostle Peter. In the old basilica on this site, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor on Christmas Day 800 CE. Accounts of the Carolingian Empire treat the coronation as the founding moment of the empire.
