Stäfa affair

1794–1795 · 18th century · Also known as Stäfa Memorial, Stäfner Handel

The Stäfa affair was a dispute of 1794–1795 in which villagers of Stäfa on Lake Zürich drew up a memorial demanding the restoration of old rural liberties and equal economic rights with the city of Zürich. The city government treated it as sedition, occupied Stäfa with troops and punished its leaders with prison and exile. It foreshadowed the fall of the old regime in 1798.
