State Law and Order Restoration Council
The State Law and Order Restoration Council was the military junta that seized power in Burma on 18 September 1988 after crushing the pro-democracy uprising. It renamed the country Myanmar in 1989, refused to recognise the National League for Democracy's victory in the 1990 election, and in 1997 renamed itself the State Peace and Development Council, which ruled until 2011.
