Statutes of Kilkenny

1366 · 14th century

The Statutes of Kilkenny were laws passed by a parliament at Kilkenny in 1366 under Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence. Aimed at the English settlers of the Lordship of Ireland, they forbade marriage with the Irish, the use of the Irish language and Brehon law, and other Gaelic customs. They reflected the shrinking of English rule in the face of a Gaelic revival and proved largely unenforceable.
