Stephen II of Naples

d. c. 800 · 8th century

Stephen II of Naples was duke of Naples from 755 and later also its bishop. Ruling with little reference to the Byzantine emperor, he made the duchy effectively independent, defended it against the Lombards of Benevento and supported the papacy. His long rule marked the transition of Naples from a Byzantine outpost to a self-governing duchy.
