Sunqur ibn Mawdud

r. 1148–1161 · 12th century

Sunqur ibn Mawdud was the founder of the Salghurid dynasty of Fars in south-western Iran. A Turkmen chief of the Salghur tribe, he seized Fars from Seljuk officials in 1148 and ruled from Shiraz as atabeg, nominally guardian of Seljuk princes but in practice independent. His descendants held Fars for more than a century, latterly under Mongol overlordship.
