Sunpu
Sunpu was the provincial capital of Suruga Province in Japan, on the site of the modern city of Shizuoka. Under the Imagawa clan it became a cultured castle town that attracted courtiers and poets from Kyoto. Tokugawa Ieyasu, who had been a hostage there as a boy, later rebuilt Sunpu Castle and lived there after handing the office of shogun to his son in 1605, until his death in 1616.
