Sweyn II of Denmark

c. 1019–1076 · 11th century · Also known as Sweyn Estridsen

Sweyn II Estridsen was King of Denmark from 1047 to 1076, a nephew of Cnut the Great through his mother Estrid. After years of war with Magnus the Good and Harald Hardrada of Norway, he secured the Danish throne and founded the dynasty that ruled Denmark until the late fourteenth century. He reorganised the Danish church into several dioceses, and five of his sons became kings.
