Ta Prohm

1186 · 12th century · Also known as Rajavihara

Ta Prohm is a temple at Angkor in Cambodia, founded by Jayavarman VII in 1186 as a Buddhist monastery dedicated to his mother. Its foundation inscription lists thousands of villages and tens of thousands of people who supplied and served it, a measure of the economic weight of Khmer religious foundations. Left largely as it was found, with giant trees growing out of its galleries, it is one of the best-known sites of Angkor.
