Tanzimat

1839–1876 · 19th century

The Tanzimat was a period of reform in the Ottoman Empire from 1839 to 1876. Prompted by growing European military and economic superiority, it sought to modernise administration, law, taxation and the army, and proclaimed the equality of Ottoman subjects regardless of religion. Accounts of the Ottoman Empire present it as a major attempt to strengthen the state from within, culminating in the first Ottoman constitution of 1876.
